Squidoo Experiment – Week 5

I saw a huge jump both in traffic and earnings from my Squidoo experiment this week. I noticed that going for keywords that don’t have any other Squidoo lenses targeting the same phrase works best. I do go for some phrases that have 1 competitor if that lens has very little unique content on it and I know I can do a better job.

Lenses at the End of Week 4 – 81     Lenses at the End of Week 5 – 90
Earnings During Week 4 – $14.60     Earnings During Week 5 -$92.40
Visitors During Week 4 – 327     Visitors During Week 5 – 893 (search engine traffic only)

Even though I wanted to hit 100 lenses, I decided it would be better for me to create 1 lens per day that is extra long and jam-packed with information that targets different related keyword phrases. That way I get more visitors to less lenses. The Squidoo lens I created yesterday had over 20 modules.

I am so excited to see my traffic more than double yet again this past week. I am having so much fun with this project.

Looking forward I have heard some really good things about Zujava and I think I may try them for my next experiment. From what I have heard they rank well in the search engines and don’t have as many competing pages for keyword phrases as Squdioo has. Maybe I’ll save all the great keywords I’ve found that have too much Squidoo competition and use them over on Zujava.

    Hi Amy
I am following your Squidoo experiment with interest. I just wanted to ask as you promoting high value items or any price items? Also, how to you promote your lenses? ie., building back links etc or do you not bother to promote them?

Good look with the rest of the experiment. Thanks Lyndsay

    Hi Lyndsay,
I am promoting products of all price points. I figured even the low priced ones can lead to additional sales of other products in their shopping cart. I am not building any back links. If the content is high-quality and engaging then people will naturally back link to them on their own. :)

Thanks Amy. I thought as much re the backlinking. One of the benefits of squidoo!

Hey Amy, I’ve been reading your blog for a long time (a few years?). In fact, I was reading it before I ever started creating niche sites…crazy!

I have to ask: Why aren’t you out building your own niche sites (or Niche blogs) instead of creating content for other companies like Squidoo, etc? The income potential is much greater with your own sites.

I know this is what you used to do, have you given up on this?

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.

    Amy,

Can you say what you mean by search engine traffic only? Do you also get facebook and other traffic and are some of your earnings from there?

Also, are you doing affiliate programs as well as amazon?

Why do you think your earnings in week 5 were so much higher than the week 4. I know you had triple the traffic but it seems that triple the earnings would have been around 45 dollars but your earnings were much higher. It is a good experiment.

Also, are you concerned that if you do go over 100 lenses that there could be a problem where you may get some deleted??

Spencer – I have over 50 active blogs right now and I don’t really want to add to that number. The Squidoo lenses allow me to tap into more niche markets. Plus, it is a nice fun change to what I’ve been doing day in and day out for the past several years.

Deb – I do get traffic from other sources, but I wanted to make sure I was only tracking one variable in my experiment. I have not used any other affiliate programs besides Amazon so far, but I may in the future. The earnings in Week 5 were especially high because I sold an item that cost over $400. I am not worried about going over 100 lenses, but the more you have the more you need to maintain them. If they rank worse than 400,000 on Squidoo they get deindexed, which is not good.

Yep, Squidoo is great. However it’s not a get rich quick type of scheme. It does take some time to start earning. I’m also doing my own experiment and so far the results are quite pleasing. The downside…the lenses are not on your site, so if anything ever goes ‘poof’, there goes down all your hard work…

    Amy,

Are you using Squidutils for your lenses? I just started at Squidoo- only have 3 lenses so far.

I read that you aren’t supposed to make your primary tag the same as your title. Do you know if this only affects your rating on Squidoo’s tiers or does it have a negative affect on your Google rank too?

Michele – Yes I do use Squidutils. I have not heard that about the primary tag, I’ll have to look into it.
