I completely understand about working all day to get your business going. I’m lucky enough to have a wahm job where I don’t have to be on the phone so I can sit and be with my son while I work at night and then spend 8 to 10 hours a day building my blogging business while he’s at school. A lot of people don’t have this and I feel I’m extremely lucky.

This is an excellent perspective Amy. The extra hours put in to build a business will be well worth it once things start becoming more automated as your business grows! This same thought keeps me going on those 10 hours days.

My husband does most of the housework. Yes I spend a lot of time with my kids. I wake up about 5 AM and go to bed around 11 PM. Yes my kids go to school except for my two youngest. I take a day off here and there, but not on any set schedule. That is the freedom of working for yourself.

How many hours do you sleep at night and how do you get housework done and take care of the kids, while you are working so many hours? Are any of your kids in school? What time do you rise in the morning and what time do you go to bed? Do you take any days off to hang out with family and friends?

I just found your blog via MyBlogLog! I have a similar goal, but my debt is even bigger adn I don't spend nearly as much time as you do.

Did you see an increase close to the same time you started increasing your hours?

Ditto what everyone has said. The worst part is starting online because you do not have that much exposure. Results can be very erratic and hard to fight on when you don’t see results. But if you believe in yourself, the exposure will increase and so will your business.

Hi Amy,

I agree with what you say. Instead of going out and getting a job, I am building my business. Even if it gets hard sometimes we have to remember we are doing this for ourselves and family.

We are our own boss. I can work as much hours or as little. Heck if I hit a flat spot this month, I know I will still get my check next month because of my residual income.

It does take time to build a business and time is what you give. Don't give up, just remember your WHY.

Thanks for saying this Amy. To be honest, I had no idea you were putting in these kind of hours. One of your posts a few months ago (maybe in June) which was the first day I read your blog, said that you were only spending a couple hours a day on your efforts. And then when I saw you earned over $5K in August, I thought, WOW, how is she doing it? She's a natural. She makes it look easy.

And of course when you see someone that seems to be able to generate money "easily" online, the rest of us think -- Why can't I do that? I must be a dummy.

So how do you raise 4 kids, including a baby and spend 10 plus hours a day online? Do you sleep?

I can so relate to your story with the debt and spouse having health issues.

One approach I've used, that you haven't yet, is if you end up with websites that you've created and you have more than you can continue to maintain, consider selling them on forums.digitalpoint.com -- they have a BUY, TRADE, SELL section with a website subtopic. While others would argue, no, work to generate passive income from those websites, the truth is there ARE only so many hours in a day AND once your websites have aged a bit and if they get PageRank (Google it if you don't know what it is), you can sell them.

Again, I'd only do this for sites that you don't have the time or interest to maintain.

I quit my day job a few months back to do exactly what you describe, and I have to say that you are right. It just isn’t easy.

I second that. And I guess it can be applied to anything you choose to do – on or offline. It can be extremely hard and frustrating and sometimes it doesn’t work out. But on the flipside, it can also be very rewarding, and I’m not just talking in monetary terms here. It’s what keeps you going.
